President Murmu highlights India-Slovakia economic ties

During her historic visit to Slovakia, President Droupadi Murmu called upon Slovak business leaders to leverage India’s rapid economic growth by building strong trade and investment ties. Speaking at the Slovakia-India Business Forum in Bratislava, she highlighted India’s transformation as a global leader in technology, innovation, and sustainability.

President Murmu noted that Slovakia, with its strategic location and industrial strength, is an ideal partner for India. She emphasized that Indian talent—recognized globally for its skills and work ethic—could play a vital role in supporting Slovakia’s workforce needs.

“India is committed to enhancing trade relations with Slovakia. The presence of a large and diverse Indian business delegation reflects our strong interest in exploring opportunities here. We have seen similar enthusiasm from the Slovak side,” President Murmu said.

Thanking Slovak President Peter Pellegrini for his efforts to deepen bilateral economic ties, she highlighted the importance of platforms like the Slovakia-India Business Forum in fostering collaboration and shared growth.

President Murmu also praised Slovakia’s cultural appreciation for India, referencing her visit to a painting exhibition by Slovak children themed on Indian fairy tales. The event, organized by the Slovak-Indian Friendship Society, showcases the longstanding cultural bonds between the two countries. She also enjoyed a puppet show based on the Ramayana by the Babadlo Puppet Theatre, reflecting the deep cultural connection.

Later, President Murmu attended a banquet hosted by President Pellegrini at Bratislava Castle, where Slovak artists performed musical tributes including the national anthems of both countries.

Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome, President Murmu acknowledged Slovakia’s affection for Indian traditions—from yoga and Ayurveda to Indian cuisine—as a reflection of strong people-to-people ties. She reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing this friendship.

On Wednesday, President Murmu held bilateral talks with President Pellegrini, discussing ways to boost cooperation across sectors such as defence, science, technology, and education. The Indian delegation included Minister of State Nimuben Bambhaniya, MPs Dhaval Patel and Sandhya Ray, and senior officials.

She also met Richard Rasi, Speaker of the National Council of Slovakia, congratulating him on his new role and underscoring the role of parliamentarians in strengthening mutual goodwill. President Murmu acknowledged the efforts of the Slovak-India Friendship Group in promoting inter-parliamentary dialogue and cooperation.

This marks the first visit by an Indian President to Slovakia in nearly 30 years, a significant step that the Ministry of External Affairs says will open doors to deeper bilateral engagement and new initiatives.
