India Surpasses 200 GW in Renewable Energy Production

India has officially crossed the 200 gigawatt (GW) milestone in renewable energy (RE) production as of September, primarily driven by solar and wind energy.

According to the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the country’s renewable energy generation capacity—including small and large hydro, biomass, co-generation, and waste-to-energy—reached 201,457.91 megawatts (MW). This achievement is largely fueled by solar energy, contributing 90,762 MW, and wind energy, which accounted for 47,363 MW.

Currently, non-fossil fuel-based power capacity constitutes 46.3 percent of India’s total installed electricity generation capacity. The leading states in this sector are Rajasthan (31.5 GW), Gujarat (28.3 GW), Tamil Nadu (23.7 GW), and Karnataka (22.3 GW).

Since 2014, the country has seen a remarkable 86 percent increase in power generation from renewable sources, rising from 193.5 billion units (BU) to 360 BU. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s renewable energy capacity has surged by 175 percent, from 75 GW to over 200 GW.

Additionally, India is making strides in the green shipping sector, aiming to rank among the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and among the top five by 2047.

As the only G20 nation to meet its climate targets ahead of schedule, India maintains the lowest per capita emissions in the group. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India’s cumulative installed wind power capacity reached 44.7 GW in 2023, placing it fourth globally. The country added 2.8 GW of wind capacity in 2023, marking a significant rebound after five years of slower growth.
