India’s Tourism Sector Set to Generate 39.5 Million Jobs by Year-End

India’s tourism sector is projected to create around 39.5 million jobs by the end of this year, with estimates rising to 42.3 million by 2025, according to a report released on Thursday.

Direct employment will account for 31% of these roles, including positions such as tour guides, hotel staff, and tour operators, as noted by NLB Services, a provider of technology and digital talent solutions.

Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, highlighted that indirect employment will comprise 69% of jobs, spanning areas like local artisans, logistics, transport operators, supply chain roles, IT support for online bookings, data analysis, and landscape maintenance.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts a 7.1% annual GDP growth for India’s travel and tourism sector over the next decade, with the industry contributing approximately $199.6 billion to the GDP. In the recent Union Budget, the government allocated Rs 2,479 crore for tourism in FY25, which is expected to further bolster the sector.

Alug emphasized the tourism sector’s strong multiplier effect, stating that each direct job is anticipated to create multiple indirect jobs.

Emerging trends indicate a growing interest in adventure and wellness tourism, as well as culinary experiences, as travelers seek to engage with local flavors. Spiritual tourism continues to attract significant domestic and international visitors to cities like Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Bodh Gaya.

Moreover, India ranks 10th globally on the Medical Tourism Index (MTI) for 2020-2021, with expectations for further growth, leading to projected increases in healthcare professionals: a 12% rise in nurses, 10% in doctors, and 15% in other healthcare staff.

The report also highlights the expanding backpacker hostel market, which caters to young travelers looking for budget-friendly and social options. This segment is expected to create opportunities for hostel managers, event coordinators, and digital marketers, contributing an additional 5% to overall tourism employment, according to Alug.
