Piyush Goyal in Brussels: India and EU accelerate push for balanced FTA
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met Maros Sefcovic, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, in Brussels on Monday to advance the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, which have entered a crucial stage.
During the high-level talks, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a comprehensive, balanced, and mutually beneficial trade pact at the earliest.
“Our discussions focused on giving impetus to the India-EU FTA negotiations. We reiterated our shared goal of achieving a swift and balanced agreement,” Goyal wrote on X.
The minister also met Germany’s Federal Foreign Affairs Minister Johann Wadephul, discussing areas of mutual growth and the importance of an early conclusion of the India–EU FTA.
According to India’s Commerce Ministry, the Brussels visit aims to provide strategic direction and political impetus to the ongoing negotiations, building on the progress made during the 14th round of talks earlier this month. Key focus areas include market access, non-tariff measures, and regulatory cooperation.
The visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its economic partnership with the European Union, one of its largest trading partners, while promoting resilient supply chains, sustainable growth, and a rules-based global trading system.
The renewed momentum follows recent high-level interactions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, reaffirming the strategic depth of the India–EU partnership.
