South Korea, US to hold second round of tariff talks in Washington
South Korea and the United States are set to hold a second round of technical-level tariff talks in Washington this week, as both sides aim to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement by early July.
A delegation from South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is expected to arrive in Washington by Tuesday to begin negotiations. The talks may start as early as Tuesday (U.S. time), according to ministry officials.
Key topics under discussion include trade imbalances, non-tariff measures, economic security, digital trade, country-of-origin rules, and commercial considerations, according to Yonhap news agency.
Last month, the U.S. initiated reciprocal tariffs on partner nations, including a 25% duty on South Korea, before pausing the move to allow for bilateral talks. Both countries agreed to aim for a “July package” deal before the 90-day tariff pause expires on July 8.
Following a first round of talks earlier this month, South Korean Trade Minister Cheong In-kyo and Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer last week in Jeju, again urging full tariff exemptions.
“We are monitoring closely, as the U.S. may present new tariff and cooperation demands during the upcoming session,” said a ministry official.
The talks come amid South Korea’s presidential election campaign, and officials have pledged a careful and strategic approach to negotiations.
