Trump doubles tariffs on China, vows tough stance

The White House reaffirmed President Donald Trump’s strong stance on China following the announcement of increased tariffs on Chinese imports, doubling the rate from 10% to 20%.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday emphasized Trump’s tough approach, stating that his administration remains committed to defending US interests against China.

Leavitt reiterated the position of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who warned that the US must always be prepared for any economic or military confrontation. His remarks followed China’s declaration that it is ready to fight “any type of war”, including a trade or tariff war.

Trump’s history of tariffs on China

Leavitt highlighted Trump’s long-standing hardline policies on China, pointing out that billions of dollars’ worth of tariffs were implemented during his first term.

“The President has been very tough on China, not just now with 20% tariffs and additional reciprocal tariffs set for April 2, but also in his first term,” she said.

According to Leavitt, even the previous administration chose not to rescind Trump’s tariffs, recognizing their role in deterring China and generating US revenue.

China’s retaliation and rising tensions

China swiftly retaliated against the new tariffs by imposing 10% to 15% import levies on various American agricultural and food products.

Speaking on the escalating trade war, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian warned, “If war is what the US wants—be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war—we’re ready to fight till the end.”

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that the US is “prepared” for war with China, stating that military and economic strength is key to deterring conflict.

US concerns over China’s influence in Panama

Leavitt also addressed concerns over China’s growing influence in the Panama Canal, emphasizing Trump’s commitment to preventing Chinese control over key global trade routes.

“The President has been very vocal about ensuring that China does not control the Panama Canal, which is a very important place for the United States,” she said.

She added that Trump is committed to curbing Chinese influence in the Western Hemisphere, particularly in strategic locations like the Panama Canal.

With US-China tensions escalating, the impact of these tariff hikes remains to be seen as both nations brace for further economic confrontation.
