USTR Greer joins APEC talks in South Korea
US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer arrived in South Korea on Wednesday to participate in the upcoming APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting, scheduled for Thursday and Friday at the International Convention Centre on Jeju Island, Yonhap reported.
Greer is also expected to meet with South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ahn Duk-geun, on Friday during the sidelines of the summit. The two sides will discuss follow-ups to last month’s high-level trade talks in Washington.
The discussions aim to finalize a comprehensive deal addressing U.S. tariffs and enhancing bilateral economic cooperation by early July, when President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on reciprocal duties is set to expire.
Earlier, the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on South Korean goods starting April 9, but paused them temporarily for negotiation purposes.
South Korea has proposed expanded collaboration in shipbuilding and energy sectors to ease U.S. tariff pressures.
Attention is also on a possible meeting between Greer and China’s new trade representative, Li Chenggang. Recently, the U.S. and China agreed in Geneva to reduce tariffs for 90 days as part of renewed negotiations.
Under that deal, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30%, and Chinese tariffs on U.S. imports will reduce from 125% to 10%.
