Vistara to Adopt ‘AI2’ Flight Number After Merger with Air India Next Month
Air India announced on Wednesday that flights operated by Vistara will begin using the flight code ‘AI2’ following the merger of the two airlines next month.
While the integration will officially take place on November 12, Air India assured that the Vistara experience will “remain the same.” The merger involves Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, and Air India.
Currently, Air India uses the airline code ‘AI,’ while Vistara operates under the code ‘UK.’ According to the company, both airlines have been working diligently for over a year to ensure a smooth transition for customers and staff.
“Although the legal entities and Air Operator Certificates will merge on November 12, the Vistara experience will persist. Vistara aircraft, crew, and service will continue as before, but with AI2XXX flight numbers available for booking via airindia.com,” an Air India spokesperson stated.
In parallel, Air India is upgrading its narrow-body fleet with new aircraft deliveries and retrofitting legacy aircraft with entirely new interiors. Additionally, Vistara’s catering services will now be extended to Air India.
“We look forward to combining the proud legacies and best practices of both airlines to create a new airline group that India can be proud of,” the spokesperson added.
In July, Air India announced it had harmonized operating procedures across key functions for the four Tata Group airlines as an essential step toward the merger. Vistara, which is 51% owned by Tata Group and 49% by Singapore Airlines, is merging into Air India to establish a single full-service carrier.
Simultaneously, Air India’s subsidiaries, AIX Connect (formerly Air Asia) and Air India Express, have merged to form a single low-cost airline.
