Chicago bids final goodbye to the pillar of its Hindu Community

Shanti Rani Ghai peacefully departed from this world on Saturday morning, Dec 2nd, 2023. Jhaiji, as she was lovingly known to many, was born on Feb 22nd, 1925 and lived a long, rich, fulfilling life. Jhaiji’s love knew no bounds, extending not only to her family but also to friends and neighbors who were fortunate enough to know her. Though we mourn the loss of our Dear Jhaiji, we find solace in the beautiful memories she bestowed upon us.

Jhaiji was a woman full of energy who made the most out of life, hers and ours. There was never a dull moment when you were around her. How many people her age have the courage to hold a rifle or play tennis or try to walk a Rottweiler at 98? She created self made physical therapy routines to keep herself fit and was also the only person in the Ghai family who could go on thrilling roller coasters with grandkids even in her 80s.

Jhaiji’s favorite spot was the kitchen and even as late as this summer she was making food and her own morning chai. She loved to cook and every one of the grandkids remembers at least one special dish of her. From Mathri to Spaghetti with beans to Pindi Chole with the special chole masala that only she knew where to get from in India and the hot oil tadka on top.

Jhaiji had a special bond even with the family pets. She spent countless hours outside in the Sun in California with our dog Sully. Milo and Jhaiji also cherished many precious moments together watching activity outside on Winthrop Ave through the windows of her home.

A very vibrant woman, full of life who never put herself in a box, Jhaiji was an unconventional woman, she exemplified the spirit of a warrior, truly a Kshatriya. She persevered through anything that came her way and we were all looking forward to her completing a century, thinking of her as indestructible, like wonder woman. She was someone who withstood the test of time and even until the end she didn’t want to be a burden on anyone. We are thankful that she was able to live a life as long as she had and gave us the stories, let alone pictures, to pass along in her stead.

Jhaiji’s legacy is lived by all 4 of her kids, 11 grandkids, and many great grandkids. Jhaiji, the thing you wanted most was to see us all together – all your kids, their kids and even their kids. We all came together to say goodbye to you and we know you relished the moment watching us from the sky above. Thank you for the fun, thank you for the memories, thank you for being our grandma. We love you and will miss you. We are confident you are enjoying your next phase in life and making the most of it. We wish we are able to have the same tenacity, grit, perseverance, and love of life throughout our life as you had.

This incredible mother, grandmother, & great grandmother was a treasure for all of us. We pray that she finds eternal peace.
