The Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) recently showcased the success of its 8th Annual Dim Sum & Then Some: Uptown 5K, 10K, and Kids Dash, held in the vibrant Uptown neighborhood. This year’s event set a new record, attracting over 2,500 participants and raising more than $150,000 to support CMAA’s comprehensive social services programs, which benefit nearly 5,000 individuals annually from over 40 countries.
The event was enriched with cultural traditions, including a Laotian ceremony where runners exchanged wrist ties and a traditional Chinese lion dance. These activities contributed to the festive atmosphere, culminating in a lively block party on Argyle Street. Attendees enjoyed dim sum, bubble tea, and energetic performances from CMAA’s youth dance troupes and Lao dancers.
The strong community support was highlighted by the presence of Deputy Governor Grace Hou, Congressman Mike Quigley, and several alderpeople. Representatives from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago also joined, underscoring the event’s wide community engagement. The event’s success was supported by generous sponsors, including Fleet Feet, d’Escoto Inc., and Fresenius Kabi, as well as community partners like Uptown United and JoyYee Noodles.
