Chinese Mutual Aid Association breaks records at August 2 Uptown 5K and cultural celebration

The Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) hosted its most successful “Dim Sum & Then Some” event to date on Saturday, August 2, with over 3,000 participants gathering in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood for the 9th annual 5K, 10K, and Kids Dash. The event raised more than $150,000 to support immigrant, refugee, and low-income families across the Chicago area.

The day began with a Dragon Dance Eye-Opening Ceremony led by Director General Dennis Yen-Feng Lei from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago, alongside CMAA youth and community partners. A traditional Laotian wrist-tying ritual and a Chinese Lion Dance followed, offering blessings of good fortune to runners.

After the race, Argyle Street transformed into a festive block party featuring dim sum, bubble tea, and cultural performances from CMAA youth dancers and Thai artists. Elected leaders in attendance included Congressman Mike Quigley, Illinois Representative Hoan Huynh, and Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth.

The event’s success was supported by sponsors such as Fleet Feet, Fresenius Kabi, the Asian McDonald’s Operator Association, Endeavor Health, and others. CMAA, founded in 1981, serves nearly 5,000 clients annually across Uptown, Elgin, and West Ridge.
