FIIDS hosts ‘Celebration of Democracies’ to honor US and India’s shared values

On August 24, the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) hosted the “Celebration of Democracies” event, commemorating the Independence Days of both the United States and India. This special occasion highlighted the shared democratic values that unite these two great nations.
The event was widely attended by notable figures, including Mayor of Morton Grove Dan DiMaria, officials from the Village of Morton Grove, Consul General of India Somnath Ghosh, State Senator Ram Villivalam, and prominent community leaders like Himanshu Sheth and Rakesh Malhotra. The program began with a traditional Deep Prjavalan (lamp-lighting) ceremony, setting a reverent tone for the evening.
Speakers at the event emphasized the similarities between the world’s two largest democracies and the importance of engaging in healthy politics for a better future. They also highlighted FIIDS’ background, activities, and achievements. Key speakers, Mayor DiMaria and Consul General Ghosh, applauded FIIDS’ efforts and expressed appreciation for the organization’s contributions to the community.
Centered on the core principles of democracy, the event focused on the roles and responsibilities in promoting prosperity and harmony. It provided a crucial platform for discussing critical Indo-American policy issues, underscoring the significance of the relationship between the US and India.
A key highlight of the event was a briefing on the recent FIIDS Advocacy Summit held on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. The summit addressed important policy topics relevant to the Indo-American community, reflecting FIIDS’ ongoing commitment to advocacy and policy engagement.
Devesh Pandit, the event organizer, speaking on behalf of FIIDS, expressed sincere gratitude to all participants and looked forward to their involvement in future FIIDS events. These gatherings will continue to celebrate the shared democratic heritage and aspirations of the United States and India.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Datta Pandit. FIIDS is eager to continue building networks and extending invitations to elected officials, community leaders, and volunteers to participate in such meaningful events.
