Happy Guru Purnima!

On this auspicious day, the IndoUS Tribune extends its heartfelt greetings to our patrons and the entire community. Today, Thursday, July 10, 2025, marks Guru Purnima, a day that transcends all boundaries to celebrate a bond of profound reverence and wisdom.

The history and why we celebrate Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is not merely a festival; it is a sacred observance steeped in both history and spiritual significance. The word “Guru” itself beautifully captures its essence, with “Gu” symbolizing darkness and “Ru” representing the light that dispels it. We celebrate this day to honor those who, through their guidance and knowledge, lead us from ignorance to enlightenment.

In the Hindu tradition, the day is also known as Vyasa Purnima, commemorating the birth anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa. He is revered as the Adi Guru, the first and foremost teacher, who compiled the Vedas and authored the epic Mahabharata, providing the world with a timeless guide to life, duty, and dharma.

The reverence for Guru Purnima extends across other faiths and traditions as well:

  • In Buddhism, it is believed that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on this very full moon day in Sarnath, setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma.
  • In Jainism, the day is dedicated to honoring Lord Mahavira and his chief disciple, Gautam Swami, in recognition of their invaluable transfer of spiritual wisdom.

A legacy of guidance for a better world

The tradition of Guru Purnima is a powerful reminder of the value of true guidance in an age overflowing with information but often starved of wisdom. The legend of the guru is one of selfless dedication—a teacher who nurtures not just for knowledge, but for life itself. This day is a collective salute to every individual who has played this pivotal role in our lives, from the spiritual guru who guides us toward inner awakening to the parents and mentors who taught us life’s most fundamental lessons.

As we join in traditional observances like Guru Puja, chanting, and seeking blessings, let us reflect on the profound impact of this relationship. The Guru’s influence is a timeless gift, one that illuminates our path and helps us to become better human beings.

The IndoUS Tribune and Jagran TV Chicago are proud to join you in this day of gratitude. We wish you and your loved ones a blessed Guru Purnima, filled with reflection, peace, and renewed commitment to the path of knowledge and virtue.
