Hindu leader’s arrest triggers crackdown in Bangladesh: Sumon Sharma’s organization fights for justice

The arrest of ISKCON leader Prabhu Chinmoy Das on November 25, 2024, by the Bangladesh Police triggered a wave of unrest, intensifying the persecution of Hindus in the country. Following his detention, Hindu activists took to the streets on November 26, demanding his release. That same day, a Muslim lawyer, Saiful Islam Alif, practicing at the Chittagong Judge Court, was murdered by unidentified assailants. His killing was followed by a severe crackdown on the Hindu community, with several Hindus arrested and over two thousand charged in multiple cases. Amidst the turmoil, Hindu organizations faced immense pressure, with their activities coming to a near halt.

Despite this hostile climate, Sanatan Moitree Sangha (SMS)-Bangladesh, led by Secretary General Sumon Sharma, is striving to rebuild the Hindu community’s voice and presence. On February 28, 2025, SMS-Bangladesh organized a discussion meeting and cultural program titled ‘Dharma Rakshti Rakshita’ in Patiya Upazila, Chittagong district. The event brought together 300 Hindus, demonstrating a defiant stand against oppression.

Speaking at the event, Sumon Sharma reaffirmed the commitment to reviving Hindu organizational activities in Bangladesh. The success of this gathering marks a significant step toward reclaiming religious and cultural identity despite the relentless persecution. SMS-Bangladesh remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard Hindu rights and ensure their voices are heard in an increasingly challenging landscape.
