Seattle witnessed a historic moment on Friday as the Indian Tricolor was raised on the city’s iconic Space Needle for the first time to mark India’s 79th Independence Day. The landmark, built in 1962 for the World’s Fair, became a powerful backdrop for the milestone, reflecting both India’s global ties and the city’s vibrant Indian American community.

The ceremony was attended by India’s Consul General in Seattle, Mayor Bruce Harrell, and other city officials. Leaders praised the contributions of the Indian diaspora to Seattle’s growth as a global technology hub. Congressman Adam Smith, Chief Justice Debra L. Stephens, and Seattle Parks & Recreation Director AP Diaz also joined the celebration. Congressman Smith called the flag atop the Space Needle a tribute to the city’s diversity and strong partnership with India.

Following the hoisting, a community reception took place at Kerry Park, where attendees gathered against sweeping views of the skyline. The event featured cultural performances, renditions of national anthems, and a special recital by acclaimed artist Piyush Mishra.

To honor the occasion, proclamations declaring August 15 as India Day were issued by King County, Seattle, Spokane, and other cities in Washington state, cementing the day as a landmark celebration for the community.
