Krishnamoorthi sharpens national profile with challenge to Trump policies amid Senate speculation

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) has intensified his criticism of the Trump Administration, positioning himself as a prominent Democratic voice on health care, food security, national security, and foreign policy. The moves come as speculation grows over a possible Senate run should Senator Dick Durbin step aside.
Earlier this month, Krishnamoorthi introduced the Bringing Back Benefits Act, aimed at reversing Medicaid and SNAP cuts he described as “a moral failure and a massive mistake.” The Republican-backed Reconciliation Bill slashed nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid funding and $186 billion from food assistance, threatening coverage for more than 700,000 Illinois residents.
“Families across Illinois and the nation are already feeling the devastating impacts,” Krishnamoorthi said during a visit to Franklin Hospital in Benton, one of nine Illinois hospitals at risk of closure. “We must act now before millions more are affected.”
On domestic security, Krishnamoorthi denounced President Trump’s decision to deploy federal troops to Chicago without state approval, calling it “an illegal attempt to militarize Chicago.” He pledged to back legislation preventing any president from sending military forces into states unilaterally.
At the national security front, Krishnamoorthi, ranking member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, introduced the bipartisan No Advanced Chips for the CCP Act. The bill would block advanced U.S. semiconductors from reaching China without congressional approval. He warned that Trump’s openness to selling downgraded NVIDIA Blackwell chips to Beijing could jeopardize U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence and defense.
“For years, the CCP has treated America’s cutting-edge chips like an all-you-can-eat buffet. This bill puts an end to that practice,” he said.
Krishnamoorthi also urged the White House to reject Russia’s proposal to let China serve as a guarantor of Ukrainian security, arguing Beijing cannot be trusted while it continues to back Moscow.
With sharp stances spanning health care, food aid, technology, and global security, Krishnamoorthi is drawing national attention. Democratic strategists say his recent actions reflect more than policy advocacy—they signal the outline of a Senate campaign.
“He’s building the profile of a senator-in-waiting,” one strategist observed, “unafraid to take on Trump, defend Illinois families, and shape America’s future on the global stage.”
