The ten-member delegation, led by Jason Smith, Board Member of the Montana World Affairs Council, traveled across India from June 26 to July 9, 2025, in a program facilitated by the Consulate General of India in Seattle. The initiative aimed to give Montana youth firsthand exposure to India’s heritage, culture, and modern progress while strengthening people-to-people ties.

Exploring India’s heritage and diversity

Students visited iconic destinations including the Rath Yatra in Odisha, Ram Temple in Ayodhya, ISKCON Temple in Vrindavan, Taj Mahal in Agra, Konark Sun Temple, and Lucknow’s Bara Imambara and Rumi Darwaza. The program included interactions with officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, visits to educational institutions such as KIIT/KISS in Odisha and CMS in Lucknow, and cultural workshops that deepened their appreciation for Indian art, traditions, and community values.

Building bridges through youth exchange

The students were selected through a competitive India-focused outreach program across Montana schools, culminating in the Indian Film Festival at the University of Montana in Missoula. Governor Gianforte praised the Consulate for promoting initiatives that bring American and Indian youth closer.

Delegation leader Jason Smith described India as “magical,” adding, “The people are warm and wonderful—the sights and sounds are so unique. For our young delegation, it was important to learn firsthand that there is more that unites us than makes us different.”

Sharing stories at the Capitol

At the reception, the students shared personal experiences of India’s grandeur, vibrant festivals, and cultural richness, highlighting the importance of cross-cultural understanding and nurturing future leaders. The initiative underscores how India–U.S. relations are strengthened not only through diplomacy and trade but also through youth-driven cultural exchange.
