Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) issued a series of strong statements this week addressing critical developments ranging from a bomb threat in his district to healthcare cuts, corruption scandals, and threats to national security.
Condemning threats against Texas lawmakers in Illinois
In a strongly worded statement, Congressman Krishnamoorthi condemned a bomb threat that targeted members of the Texas House Democratic Caucus staying in St. Charles, Illinois, part of his congressional district.
“A threat of violence against public officials is an attack on the very foundations of our democracy,” said the Congressman. “I’m grateful no one was harmed and thank law enforcement and Governor Pritzker for their swift response. I stand with the Texas lawmakers who are bravely defending free and fair elections. In a democracy, we resolve our differences with votes—not violence.”
Fighting to protect healthcare access in rural Illinois
During a visit to Franklin Hospital in Benton, Krishnamoorthi sounded the alarm about the devastating impact of the Republican-passed ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act,’ which slashes over $1 trillion in federal healthcare funding — including $900 billion from Medicaid.
“You can’t cut a fifth of a hospital’s funding and expect it to stay open,” he stated, standing alongside hospital CEO Jim Johnson and frontline staff. “This hospital delivers babies, handles emergencies, and serves rural patients who rely on Medicaid. These cuts don’t just threaten budgets — they threaten lives.”
Krishnamoorthi warned that the legislation could result in the closure of nine hospitals in Illinois, and force families off Medicaid, creating longer wait times, fewer providers, and dangerous bureaucratic hurdles.
The Congressman also joined state and local leaders to mark the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, reinforcing his commitment to protecting these landmark programs.
No clemency for Epstein’s co-conspirator
On national television and in Congress, Krishnamoorthi introduced a resolution opposing any form of clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted in 2021 for trafficking underage girls alongside Jeffrey Epstein.
“Maxwell’s crimes are monstrous. Her refusal to testify without immunity is an insult to survivors and a threat to justice,” Krishnamoorthi said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “There must be no deal to let her walk free.”
He also accused the Trump administration of blocking full disclosure of the Epstein files and raised concerns about political interference in justice.
Holding China and U.S. leadership accountable
As Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, Krishnamoorthi joined Congressman Gregory Meeks in challenging a recent decision by the Trump administration to reverse export controls on NVIDIA’s H20 chip — a move reportedly made after a private White House meeting with the company’s CEO.
“Export controls are crucial to stopping the CCP from using American technology for cyberattacks or military aggression,” said Krishnamoorthi. “Weakening these protections puts our security and innovation at risk.”
He emphasized the importance of national security over corporate interests, criticizing the lack of consultation with key federal agencies.
Inspiring the next generation: Congressional App Challenge
Congressman Krishnamoorthi also announced the 2025 edition of the Congressional App Challenge, the largest student coding competition in the U.S., encouraging middle and high school students in his district to participate.
“This is a chance for young innovators to unleash their creativity, develop coding skills, and make an impact through technology,” he said.
