Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi stands up for working families, challenges Trump on rising grocery costs

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi continues to advocate for working families, taking a strong stand against rising grocery costs, corporate greed, and attacks on social safety nets. This week, he brought Steve Powell, President of UFCW Local 881, as his guest to Donald Trump’s Joint Congressional Address, highlighting their shared fight against corporate grocery store mergers that drive up prices for everyday Americans.
“For forty years, Steve Powell has been a tireless advocate for Illinois’ working families,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “Donald Trump owes every hardworking American an explanation as to why he is cutting taxes for billionaires while making it harder for families to afford groceries.”
Powell, who represents 34,000 members in retail food and drug stores across Illinois and Northwest Indiana, echoed Krishnamoorthi’s concerns. “As Americans struggle with soaring grocery prices, we’re grateful to have champions like Raja fighting for affordable, high-quality food on our dinner tables,” said Powell.
Fighting back at House Oversight Committee
During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Krishnamoorthi directly called out the Trump Administration for its failure to address rising grocery costs, particularly the price of eggs.
“President Trump, if you’re watching this hearing, I respectfully ask when will egg costs be high enough for you to issue one executive order on bird flu? $10 a carton? $15 a carton? It’ll soon be cheaper to buy a magazine for an AK-47 than to buy breakfast. This is flat-out wrong,” he stated.
Krishnamoorthi also defended Chicago against Trump’s repeated attacks. “President Trump has said many things about Chicago, including that it is ‘worse than Afghanistan’… The facts say otherwise. Chicago has been named the best big city in America for eight years in a row, is home to the largest rail hub and a booming quantum technology industry, and boasts the second-highest number of Fortune 500 headquarters in the U.S. That doesn’t sound like Afghanistan to me.”
As Trump’s policies continue to favor corporations and billionaires, Krishnamoorthi remains committed to fighting for working families, pushing for economic relief, and ensuring that essential goods like groceries remain affordable for all Americans.
