Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) issued a series of high-profile statements this week, ranging from honoring the legacy of U.S. Senator Dick Durbin to demanding urgent legislative action on insider trading, raising alarm over sensitive defense leaks, and releasing a scathing bipartisan report on Chinese AI surveillance.
Saluting Senator Durbin: A son of Illinois honored
In a heartfelt statement following U.S. Senator Dick Durbin’s announcement that he would not seek reelection, Congressman Krishnamoorthi celebrated the Senator’s decades-long commitment to Illinois and the nation.
“Today is a day to celebrate Senator Dick Durbin for his exemplary career of public service,” Krishnamoorthi said, calling him a “champion for everyday families” and a legislative force behind healthcare access, infrastructure investment, Dreamer protections, and judicial confirmations.
“From one son of downstate to another: Thank you, Senator,” Krishnamoorthi concluded, signaling a deep personal and political admiration for Durbin’s legacy.
Cracking down on Congressional stock trades amid Trump-era tariff volatility
In a sharply worded letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Krishnamoorthi urged immediate passage of the Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act, which he co-leads with Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Cory Mills (R-FL). The bill seeks to ban members of Congress and their families from trading individual stocks while in office.
Citing disturbing signs that elected officials may have profited from non-public information surrounding recent Trump-era tariff announcements, Krishnamoorthi pointed to market activity on April 9th, when President Trump’s social media post “IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!” preceded a 2,000-point surge in the Dow Jones.
“Improper activity—or even the appearance of impropriety—further erodes trust between public servants and the American people,” he warned.
Renewed call for Pentagon accountability amid Yemen leak scandal
Krishnamoorthi also reiterated his demand for the resignation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, following reports that Hegseth had shared sensitive operational details of U.S. airstrikes in Yemen—including flight schedules—with a private Signal group consisting of his wife, brother, and personal lawyer.
“This latest report—disclosing real-time military strike details to family members—takes it to a new and deeply troubling level,” Krishnamoorthi said. “If he fails to resign, President Trump must dismiss him for the safety of our service members and country.”
Chinese AI platform ‘DeepSeek’ exposed in bipartisan committee report
On Capitol Hill, Krishnamoorthi joined House Select Committee Chair John Moolenaar (R-MI) to release a groundbreaking report titled “DeepSeek Unmasked: Exposing the CCP’s Latest Tool For Spying, Stealing, and Subverting U.S. Export Control Restrictions.”
The investigation found that DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence platform, covertly funnels U.S. user data to the Chinese Communist Party and was likely trained on unlawfully obtained American AI content—powered by tens of thousands of Nvidia chips acquired in possible violation of U.S. export laws.
“DeepSeek is a deeply troubling reflection of the CCP’s broader strategy to undermine U.S. national security and technological leadership,” Krishnamoorthi said. The committee has now demanded answers from Nvidia on how its chips may have ended up in Chinese hands.
A week of oversight, ethics, and national security vigilance
Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s latest actions underscore his growing influence on national security, ethics reform, and bipartisan tech oversight. As Illinois prepares to bid farewell to one of its longest-serving Senators, Krishnamoorthi is stepping forward as a leading voice—both in safeguarding American democracy and confronting foreign threats.
