The Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago (HTGC) marked Shri Rama Navami with immense devotion and cultural splendor from March 26 to March 29, 2026, drawing over 1,200 devotees from across the Chicagoland area for a spiritually enriching celebration.
The festivities commenced on Thursday, March 26, the auspicious day of Shri Rama Navami, with sacred rituals including Abhishekam and the Sri Rama Taraka Homam. These ceremonies set a deeply devotional tone, immersing attendees in prayer and reverence from the very beginning.
On Friday evening, devotees gathered for Choornotsavam, a traditional ritual symbolizing purification and devotion, during which turmeric was ceremonially prepared to adorn Lord Rama and Sita Devi.
Saturday’s events formed the centerpiece of the celebrations, highlighted by the grand Sita Rama Kalyanam, the divine celestial wedding of Lord Rama and Sita. A large congregation witnessed this sacred ritual, followed by a complimentary traditional wedding feast served by the temple. In the afternoon, members of the Chinmaya Mission led a mass recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa in the presence of Swami Sharanananda, creating an atmosphere charged with devotion and spiritual energy.
The evening featured the serene Oonjal Seva, where the divine couple was placed on a ceremonial swing, allowing devotees to participate in Chamara Seva and experience a close, personal connection with the deities.
The celebrations concluded on Sunday, March 29, with the Rama Pattabhishekam, the symbolic coronation of Lord Rama, bringing the four-day event to a spiritually fulfilling close. Throughout the weekend, the temple grounds echoed with traditional Nadaswaram performances by visiting artists, along with vibrant music and dance presentations by local talent. Cultural richness was further amplified by Chenda Melam performances from the Chicago Kalakshetra group and energetic Dhol Tasha by the Maharashtrian Mandal of Chicago. The event was honored by the presence of Somnath Ghosh.
Reflecting on the success of the celebrations, HTGC trustee Ranga Chandrasekaran noted that the temple, where Lord Rama is a principal deity, stands among the most prominent centers of devotion to Shri Rama in North America, and that the festival was celebrated with exceptional grandeur. Sathya Srinivasan, Chair of the Religious Committee, emphasized the meticulous planning by priests and volunteers, blending sacred traditions with cultural programming to create a holistic and memorable experience.
Looking ahead, HTGC is undertaking significant renovations of the Rama shrine and temple structure, building on last year’s successful restoration of the Raja Gopuram, with completion anticipated by Summer 2026. Jayanthi Mittur, President of HTGC, shared that the temple will celebrate its 40th anniversary this August. Preparations are already in full swing for a series of spiritual, cultural, and community focused programs to commemorate this milestone. She warmly invited the community to join in celebrating not only the temple’s rich legacy but also the enduring devotion and collective spirit that have sustained it over the decades.
