The Village of Skokie joined communities across the United States in officially proclaiming October as Hindu Heritage Month, recognizing the cultural, philosophical, and spiritual contributions of the Hindu community. The proclamation, initiated through the efforts of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), marks a proud moment for the growing Indian American and Hindu diaspora in Skokie.

The official proclamation was read by Skokie Clerk Minal Desai, and the document was presented to Susan Patel, Executive Director of the South Asian American Chamber of Commerce, at the podium in the presence of Indian community members and local dignitaries.

Mayor Ann Tennes invited Pramod Joshi, Fine Arts Commissioner of Skokie, to share remarks on Hindu heritage and its relevance in today’s world. In his address, Commissioner Joshi highlighted the timeless values and universal teachings that form the foundation of Hindu civilization.

“Hindu Heritage Month takes note of the accomplishments of Hindus throughout history and the values that inspire us,” Joshi said. “As we celebrate our ancient traditions, we also recognize their potential contributions to the challenges of the modern world.”

He went on to outline seven guiding principles rooted in Sanatan Dharma — emphasizing unity of humanity, equality of all people, nonviolence, compassion, and respect for diversity. Joshi spoke of Mahatma Gandhi as the embodiment of nonviolence, noting, “He fought the British with truth and nonviolence — and he won.”

Joshi reminded the audience that Hindu philosophy upholds the belief that “the entire world is one family” and encourages dialogue, inclusivity, and mutual respect among all faiths and cultures. “The world we are living in is hungry for peace,” Joshi concluded. “May Hindu heritage inspire all of us to be agents for nonviolence and positive peace — a fair, just, and harmonious society for all.”

The event reflected Skokie’s enduring commitment to multiculturalism and inclusivity, values long embraced by its civic leadership.
