The Swadeshi Mela 2024, held from September 12-15 at the Mall of India, wrapped up with outstanding success, drawing around 30,000 visitors and featuring over 105 vendors from both India and the local area. Organized by the Dtribals Foundation (a nonprofit 501(c)(3)), this vibrant Indian American Trade Fair showcased the rich tapestry of Indian culture through an impressive array of artifacts, handloom products, handicrafts, and traditional items from various regions of India.
Among the distinguished attendees were Consul General of India Shri Somnath Ghosh, Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Dr. M. Beena, and various local leaders, including Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli and Congressman Bill Foster. Their presence underscored the cultural and economic significance of the event, highlighting the Indian American community’s growing influence in the region.
A standout moment was the appearance of Shri Adarsh Shastri, grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, adding both cultural and historical depth to the festivities.
One of the main attractions was a live concert by Padma Shri Kailash Kher, whose electrifying performance captivated the audience. The event also featured a state handloom exhibition and lively Garba and Dandiya nights, along with the Masala Coffee Band, celebrating India’s diverse cultural traditions with dynamic music and dance.
During the closing ceremony, Mr. Arun Sao, Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, spoke passionately about the event in Chhattisgarhi, promoting community pride and recognizing key sponsors and organizations that contributed to the Mela’s success. He highlighted the rich traditions of Chhattisgarh and extended an invitation for attendees to visit the state, assuring continued governmental support for future Swadeshi Melas.
As a unique outdoor festival blending shopping, food, entertainment, and social engagement, Swadeshi Mela 2024 has solidified its place as a key cultural event in the Chicagoland area. The organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the enthusiastic turnout.
