Punjabi American Association hosts grand Teeyan da Mela in Chicagoland

The Chicagoland area recently burst with color and cultural pride as the Punjabi American Association celebrated its annual Teeyan da Mela with immense pomp and show at Ashyana Banquets. This vibrant festival, traditionally held at the onset of the rainy season, serves as a joyous tribute to Punjabi culture, specifically honoring the pivotal roles and traditions of women.

Teeyan da Mela is deeply rooted in tradition, symbolizing women’s devotion to their husbands and families, and paying homage to Goddess Parvati. The festival actively promotes cultural pride, unity, and empowerment among Punjabi women, serving as a vital bridge for preserving traditional culture and values within the Punjabi American community. It also aims to foster connections between married couples, emphasizing love, care, and commitment.
Teeyan da Mela celebrated with vibrant Punjabi spirit in Chicagoland The event at Ashyana Banquets was a grand spectacle of entertainment, featuring dynamic performances that captivated the more than 500 attendees. Performances included energetic Giddha routines, various folk dances, and traditional Dholki drumming, presented by groups such as Neha Dance Academy, Bajwa Group, Swati, and Sewa Organization. Adding to the festive atmosphere, renowned singer Rupinder Handa, famous for her hit “Kali Activa,” graced the stage and truly “rocked the festival.” The nostalgic melodies of “Boliyan,” sung by some of the elder ladies, evoked cherished memories of their youth.

Attendees indulged in a delectable array of Indian snacks and a gourmet lunch, complementing the lively cultural showcase. The venue also featured a variety of vibrant stalls offering traditional Punjabi items, including intricate Mehndi designs, exquisite jewelry, unique gift items, and authentic Punjabi chappals and clothing, creating a bustling marketplace feel.

The celebration also served as an occasion to honor key contributors. Chief Guest Sardar Darshan Singh Dhaliwal, alongside Mrs. Ghosh, wife of the Indian Consulate General, proudly presented shawls and mementos to the festival’s dedicated sponsors. Among those recognized for their support were Brij Sharma, Suga Builders, Sunil Shah, and Gurpreet Singh.

The success of the Teeyan da Mela was attributed to the active roles played by numerous community members, including Minni Multani, Jasmeet Suga, Sukhi Kaur, Naina Singh, Rajinder Mago, Shallu, Pammi Sangha, Jeevan Prabh Khaira, Inder, Kamal Hunjan, Rosiey, Gurpreet Singh Pinki ji, and Jyoti Khaira. Their collective efforts ensured a memorable experience for all present, highlighting the strength and vibrancy of the Punjabi American community in Chicagoland.
