The Village of Mount Prospect embraces cultural diversity with Diwali Awareness Day proclamation

The Village of Mount Prospect is reinforcing its commitment to cultural inclusivity by declaring November 1 Diwali Awareness Day. The proclamation, made by Mayor Paul Wm. Hoefert, honors Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which holds deep significance for Indian and South Asian communities around the world. Observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, hope over despair, and unity over division.
Mayor Hoefert’s proclamation was a gesture that celebrated the values of community, compassion, and peace. During his address, he emphasized the universal messages of love, forgiveness, and kindness that Diwali represents, extending an open invitation to all residents—regardless of faith—to join in the celebration. “Diwali is not just a festival for one community; it is a celebration of light and togetherness that speaks to all of us,” Mayor Hoefert said, inviting everyone to reflect on the themes of hope and unity that transcend cultural boundaries.
Rakesh Malhotra, President of the Global Indian Diaspora Foundation, was a special guest at the event. In his address, Malhotra shared the deeper meaning of Diwali, describing it as a time of renewal, reconciliation, and a commitment to building stronger, more connected communities. “Diwali teaches us to mend broken relationships, to forgive, and to come together in the spirit of shared light,” Malhotra said, encouraging all to embrace these values in their personal and community lives.
