U.S. lawmakers introduce resolution supporting Taiwan, rejecting CCP’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758
By Ashwani Mahajan
In a bipartisan effort to counter China’s pressure tactics, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has joined forces with Select Committee Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI) and Representatives Young Kim (R-CA) and Ami Bera (D-CA) to introduce a resolution reaffirming U.S. support for Taiwan. The resolution firmly opposes the CCP’s attempts to misrepresent UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 as justification for its sovereignty claim over Taiwan.
The measure, which has received bipartisan and bicameral support, emphasizes that the United States’ One-China Policy is not the same as the CCP’s One-China Principle—a key distinction in rejecting Beijing’s narrative. U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-ID), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), and Chris Coons (D-DE) have also co-sponsored the resolution in the Senate.
Congressman Krishnamoorthi underscored the need to counter CCP disinformation, stating:
“The CCP’s use of Resolution 2758 to claim sovereignty over Taiwan and exclude it from international organizations is both inaccurate and dangerous. UNGA Resolution 2758 does not establish Taiwan as part of China. This bipartisan resolution ensures that the United States stands firm against such misleading claims.”
Chairman Moolenaar echoed this stance, warning against Beijing’s manipulation of international institutions:
“China has long sought to distort Taiwan’s status for its own gain. This resolution reaffirms our commitment to standing with Taiwan and rejecting the CCP’s attempts to rewrite history.”
Representative Bera emphasized Taiwan’s vital contributions to global health, trade, and security:
“Taiwan deserves a seat at the table in international organizations. The United States will continue to push back against efforts to isolate Taiwan and destabilize global stability.”
Representative Kim reiterated that the U.S. does not recognize China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan:
“The CCP’s distortion of UNGA Resolution 2758 must not go unchallenged. We stand with Taiwan and will not allow Beijing to silence its voice.”
Senator Risch strongly rejected China’s claims:
“America does not recognize China’s claim over Taiwan. We see through Beijing’s coercive tactics and stand with our democratic allies.”
Senator Shaheen reaffirmed the resolution’s purpose:
“This bipartisan measure makes it clear that Taiwan’s political status is not dictated by UNGA Resolution 2758, and the CCP cannot use it to justify Taiwan’s exclusion from global institutions.”
Senator Ricketts and Senator Coons further emphasized Taiwan’s strategic importance and the need to counter China’s aggressive push to isolate it on the world stage.
With growing concerns over Beijing’s increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, this resolution signals a unified stance by U.S. lawmakers to support Taiwan’s international participation and push back against the CCP’s coercive tactics.
