
UPA celebrates record-breaking Vaisakhi Mela in Chicago

The United Punjabis of America (UPA) hosted the largest Vaisakhi Mela in the United States on April 12, 2025, in Chicago, featuring over 100 performers. The event, which celebrated Vaisakhi—marking the harvest season and the birth of the Khalsa—was led by UPA President Atul Wahi and drew large crowds for a day of music, dance, and cultural pride.
The festivities began with a lamp lighting ceremony by dignitaries including Mayor-elect John Laesch of Aurora and Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli. The much-anticipated Mr., Mrs., & Miss Punjabi Contest followed, with winners Mrs. Rimple Dogra, Miss Kiran Kaur, and Mr. Vipan Wadhera being crowned amidst cheers.A major highlight was the launch of UPA’s new website, developed by LLT Group, which provides a platform for community events and resources. The event also honored Alderwoman Shweta Baid and Professor Dr. Rajan Sachdeva for their community service.
The cultural program featured 18 vibrant performances, including classical, folk, and Bollywood dances, with a standout Bhangra segment that had attendees dancing in celebration. The evening concluded with a live concert by Zain Baig, performing iconic hits like “Laung Da Lashkara,” further electrifying the crowd.The event, which spanned six hours, was made possible by UPA’s dedicated Board and Executive Committee. Major sponsors included International Fresh Market, Indiaco, and Orochem.
