Biden Calls Harris a ‘Ramrod’ of Strength with the Moral Compass of a ‘Saint’

On Labor Day, President Joe Biden praised Vice President Kamala Harris as having a “ramrod” backbone and the moral compass of a “saint” during their first joint rally, aimed at rallying American workers and unions.

At the event in Pittsburgh—a key battleground city in Pennsylvania—Biden emphasized Harris’s strong character and commitment to unions. “She has a backbone like a ramrod and a moral compass of a saint,” Biden declared, earning enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. He assured the audience that electing Harris as President would be a significant move, highlighting her belief that unions are the backbone of the economy. “Kamala thinks, as I do, that unions are the spine of this economy. She’ll be a historic pro-union president.”

Despite Biden’s ongoing support from labor unions, questions persist about their influence, as union membership has declined to just 10% of the American workforce, down from 20% in the 1980s, according to The New York Times.

Biden, a staunch advocate for union rights, urged union members to support Harris. “We’ve made a lot of progress, and Kamala and I are going to build on that progress,” he said. “I’ll be on the sidelines, but I’ll do everything I can to help.”

The President also criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, labeling him as “anti-labor and anti-union” and accusing him of appointing individuals who undermine union rights. “Are we going to let that son of a gun do that again?” Biden questioned, referring to Trump’s previous actions against unions.

Biden warned of the risks posed by Trump, asserting that Trump’s actions could jeopardize progress made in labor rights and workers’ benefits. “Do you think he cares about your pensions or the hard work you put in every day? Hell no,” Biden said.

In her speech, Harris emphasized the critical role of unions in improving conditions for all workers. “For more than 150 years, labor unions have fought for fair pay, better benefits, and safer working conditions,” she noted. “Even if you’re not a union member, you benefit from their work—whether it’s the five-day workweek, sick leave, paid family leave, or vacation time. When unions are strong, America is strong.”
