Lady Gaga advocates for trans rights after winning Grammy Award

Lady Gaga took center stage at the 67th Grammy Awards after winning Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with Bruno Mars for their song “Die With a Smile.”

During her acceptance speech, Gaga used the moment to advocate for trans rights and support the LGBTQ+ community.

“It’s such an honor to sing for all of you. I just want to say tonight that trans people are not invisible,” Gaga said, as reported by Variety.

“Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love. Thank you.”

Gaga’s speech amid political developments

While Gaga did not make an explicitly political statement, her remarks come at a time when US President Donald Trump has signed executive orders affecting trans rights.

These include:

  • Recognizing only two unchangeable sexes at the federal level
  • Mandating transgender women in federal custody be transferred to men’s prisons
  • Targeting transgender service members in the U.S. military, asserting that being trans “conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle.”

A longtime LGBTQ+ ally

Gaga has been a vocal advocate for queer rights throughout her career. Her Born This Way Foundation focuses on empowering young people and promoting a kinder, braver world. She has also championed LGBTQ+ themes through her music.

Gaga’s Grammy night highlights

Earlier in the ceremony, Gaga performed “California Dreamin’” with Bruno Mars in a tribute to Los Angeles following the devastating wildfires.

She also debuted the music video for “Abracadabra”, a song from her upcoming album “Mayhem,” set for release on March 7.
