PIL filed in Gauhati High Court demanding impartial probe into Zubeen Garg’s death

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Gauhati High Court seeking a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the mysterious death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

The petition, submitted by Abhijit Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah, alleged serious irregularities, possible criminal conspiracy, and misuse of official power surrounding the circumstances of Garg’s death. The PIL called for judicial oversight to ensure that the investigation remains impartial and free from external influence.

Particular concerns were raised over the alleged involvement of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg in the North East India Festival, where Zubeen was scheduled to perform. The petition questioned whether DSP Garg had official approval to participate in the event, noting that the festival was primarily cultural and commercial in nature.

The PIL also highlighted potential conflicts of interest linked to Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organiser of the festival, who has strong political and bureaucratic connections in Assam. Mahanta, younger brother of former DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, remains in police custody in connection with the singer’s death.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax Department would probe alleged financial irregularities linked to Mahanta. He emphasized that the state government is coordinating with central agencies to ensure a professional and transparent investigation.

“I am confident that no one involved in Zubeen Garg’s death can evade responsibility,” the Chief Minister said, while also noting Mahanta’s connections with influential figures and dismissing unrelated aspects of his personal activities.

The PIL reflects growing public demand for clarity and accountability in the investigation, underscoring the need for an independent inquiry into one of Assam’s most high-profile cases in recent times.
