
PM Narendra Modi reminisces about meetings with Manoj Kumar in letter to his wife
In a touching tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his deep admiration for the late legendary actor Manoj Kumar, acknowledging his unforgettable contribution to Indian cinema.
The Prime Minister wrote a heartfelt letter to Kumar’s wife, Shashi Goswami, recalling the actor’s influence in shaping the cultural and patriotic spirit of India through cinema. Modi praised the late actor’s iconic performances, especially his roles that stirred a sense of national pride among generations of Indians.
Describing him as a “true icon of Indian cinema,” PM Modi noted how Kumar’s films did more than entertain—they imparted strong values of patriotism, integrity, and resilience.
In the letter, the Prime Minister also fondly remembered his personal meetings with Manoj Kumar. He reflected on those interactions with warmth and respect, highlighting the impression Kumar left on him personally and on the nation as a whole.
Earlier, Modi also expressed his grief on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
Fondly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’, Manoj Kumar was celebrated for portraying patriotic characters that resonated with the soul of the nation. He passed away on April 4 at the age of 87 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.
The actor was laid to rest with full state honours on April 5, leaving behind a legacy of films that continue to inspire and evoke national pride.
