Tom Hardy reveals ‘Venom’ was planned for crossover with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man
Hollywood star Tom Hardy has revealed that a crossover between Venom, the character he plays in Sony’s franchise, and Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), was planned but ultimately didn’t materialize.
Speaking on ‘The Discourse Podcast’ from The Playlist, Hardy confirmed that the crossover “got as close as I could possibly imagine getting” before it fell apart.
According to Variety, the Oscar-nominated actor did not specify why the project never took off but hinted that studio politics played a major role in its collapse.
Tom Hardy on Why the Crossover Didn’t Happen
“We got close,” Hardy said about the potential Spider-Man and Venom crossover. “We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun.”
When asked by podcast host Mike DeAngelo if studio politics were the reason behind the project’s failure, Hardy responded, “for all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there.”
Why Hardy Wanted a Venom-Spider-Man Film
Hardy shared that his biggest motivation for making the crossover was the fans, especially children, who often ask why their favorite characters don’t appear together in movies.
“Fundamentally, for me, it would be for the kids,” Hardy said. “Because, you know, as much as adults love superhero films, as you can tell by the box office when they’re successful, I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are. And they don’t know why their favorite characters aren’t in films together.”
Venom and Spider-Man’s Connection
Venom and Spider-Man are two of the most iconic characters in Marvel’s universe. Their relationship is complex, as Venom was born when the alien symbiote first bonded with Peter Parker before moving on to Eddie Brock.
While Spider-Man is known as the friendly neighborhood hero, Venom operates as an anti-hero, walking the fine line between villainy and justice.
Despite the failed crossover, Hardy’s comments leave the door open for potential future collaborations between Sony’s Venom universe and Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise.
