California to sue Trump administration over National Guard deployment to Portland

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Sunday that the state will sue the Trump administration over the deployment of 300 California National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, calling it an “unconstitutional abuse of power.”

In a strongly worded statement, Newsom accused President Donald Trump of using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens after a federal judge temporarily denied him authority to federalize the Oregon National Guard.

“This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power,” Newsom said. “The Trump administration is unapologetically attacking the rule of law and treating judges as political opponents.”

Trump justified the troop deployment as necessary to control protests in Portland linked to immigration enforcement actions. However, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut ruled that the demonstrations were “not significantly violent or disruptive” to justify federal intervention.

Oregon’s state government and the City of Portland have already filed a lawsuit against Trump’s order. Meanwhile, the administration has appealed the decision to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, which had previously allowed Trump to call up the National Guard in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Newsom vowed to fight the move in court, saying Californians “will not stay silent in the face of reckless and authoritarian conduct.”
