Fijian PM Rabuka meets PM Modi in New Delhi on first official India visit
Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, on his first official three-day visit to India, is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday. The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation and enhancing Indo-Pacific partnerships.
To mark the occasion, Prime Minister Modi will host a lunch in honor of his Fijian counterpart. Rabuka is accompanied by his spouse, Sulueti Rabuka, and a high-level delegation including Fiji’s Health and Medical Services Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu and senior government officials.
During the visit, Rabuka will also deliver a lecture titled “Ocean of Peace” at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), where he is expected to highlight issues of regional stability, maritime cooperation, and India-Pacific relations. He will also call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The visit follows President Murmu’s state visit to Fiji in August 2024, during which she addressed the Fijian Parliament and emphasized the “close ties” and “shared values” between the two nations. Rabuka’s arrival in New Delhi on Sunday was welcomed by Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the Eastern Region.
This high-level engagement builds on the 6th round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in Suva in July 2025. The consultations reviewed cooperation in health, education, trade and investment, agriculture, renewable energy, climate change, and cultural exchange.
The Indian side was led by Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South), Ministry of External Affairs, while the Fijian delegation was headed by Raijeli Taga, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen strategic and people-to-people ties.
Rabuka’s visit is seen as a significant step in advancing India’s Act East and Indo-Pacific outreach while reinforcing the deep historical and cultural bonds between India and Fiji.
