Sri Lanka greets India on 79th Independence Day, global missions mark celebrations

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath on Friday extended warm greetings to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the Indian government, and its people on the country’s 79th Independence Day.

“Warmest felicitations to the Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, and to the Government and people on your 79th Independence Day. May the enduring friendship between our nations continue to inspire peace, prosperity, and mutual respect,” Herath posted on X.

In Colombo, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and officials from the High Commission paid tribute at the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) Memorial, honouring soldiers who sacrificed their lives for peace and unity in Sri Lanka.

Indian diplomatic missions worldwide also celebrated the day with patriotic fervour. In Tokyo, Ambassador Sibi George hoisted the Tricolour, read President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the nation, and interacted with Indian school students.

In Singapore, the High Commission organised an ‘Ode to the Spirit of Tiranga’ exhibition, accompanied by cultural performances. High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule read excerpts from President Murmu’s address.

In Hanoi, the Indian Embassy celebrated with the Indian community and friends of India. Fiji marked the occasion with patriotic songs by students of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Suva, alongside active participation in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

In New Zealand, over 400 diaspora members, dignitaries, and Kiwi friends attended celebrations at the High Commission, where High Commissioner Neeta Bhushan hoisted the Tricolour and read the President’s address. Cultural performances by students and community members added to the festive atmosphere.

From Asia to the Pacific, India’s 79th Independence Day was marked with tributes, cultural events, and a reaffirmation of friendship between India and its global partners.
