India and Angola expand energy partnership, sign key agreements to strengthen bilateral ties
India and Angola took a major step in deepening bilateral relations on Saturday by signing several significant agreements after a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Angolan President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
The two nations signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of Ayurveda and traditional medicine, as well as agriculture. Another key agreement focused on cultural cooperation for the 2025–2029 period.
In a milestone move, Angola signed the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Framework Agreement, officially becoming the 123rd member of the global solar initiative. India also approved a $200 million Line of Credit to Angola for defence procurement, signaling a stronger defence partnership.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the growing collaboration between India and Angola, noting the occasion as a celebration of 40 years of formal diplomatic ties. He recalled India’s long-standing support for Angola’s independence and reaffirmed the two countries’ historic friendship.
“India is one of the largest buyers of Angola’s oil and gas. We have decided to expand our energy partnership,” said PM Modi. He added, “A defence credit line of $200 million has been approved for modernisation of Angola’s forces. We also discussed repairs and overhauls of defence platforms, and India is ready to assist with training Angola’s armed forces.”
Welcoming Angola to the International Solar Alliance, PM Modi also invited the country to join other Indian-led global initiatives including the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Big Cat Alliance, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
The prime minister expressed appreciation for Angola’s continued support in India’s fight against cross-border terrorism. He thanked President Lourenco for Angola’s condolences following the recent Pahalgam terror attack and highlighted both countries’ firm stance against terrorism.
In his remarks, President Lourenco described the visit as a gesture of admiration and friendship towards India. He called for bilateral cooperation grounded in achievable goals with practical impacts on citizens’ lives.
He outlined Angola’s focus areas for collaboration with India: agriculture, finance, health, defence, higher education, IT, energy, trade, and mineral resources.
The meeting marked a significant chapter in India-Angola relations, underscoring shared ambitions in development, energy security, cultural exchange, and unity within the Global South.
