India must anticipate risk of persistent American interference: Report
India should prepare for the possibility of sustained American interference in its domestic affairs as global power dynamics shift, according to a report published by the New Delhi-based Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF).
The report argues that recent developments in the Middle East demonstrate how “unbridled US power” can destabilize regions and compel nations to reassess their security outlook. It states that New Delhi must “seriously anticipate the possibility of persistent American interference,” both covert and overt, particularly if India’s independent foreign policy diverges from Anglo-American interests.
Drawing parallels with France’s early recalibration of its security posture following Donald Trump’s return to office in January 2025, the report recommends strengthening counterintelligence oversight of US-linked activities. This includes monitoring official engagements as well as unofficial channels such as media narratives and NGO activism.
The VIF analysis suggests that elements of American unilateralism predate the current administration. It references criticism faced by India during former US President Joe Biden’s tenure over incidents involving foreign-based Khalistan supporters. According to the report, individuals considered terrorists in India were portrayed as “dissidents” in sections of Western media.
The report also critiques geopolitical messaging at the 2026 Munich Security Conference, citing remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. While Rubio struck a conciliatory tone, describing the US as a “child of Europe,” the VIF paper argues that his speech appeared to celebrate Europe’s colonial past and Western dominance. It claims such rhetoric reflects an attempt to rebuild Western hegemony and signals a form of neo-imperial strategic thinking.
Further, the report contends that Europe’s strategic autonomy remains limited, particularly as the continent becomes increasingly dependent on American energy supplies following reduced reliance on Russian gas.
The VIF concludes that India must diversify partnerships, maintain strategic independence, and strengthen internal security mechanisms to safeguard its sovereignty in an evolving global order marked by great-power competition.
