PM Modi outlines ‘humanity-first’ agenda as India to chair BRICS in 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday outlined a people-centric and “humanity-first” vision for BRICS as India prepares to take over the BRICS chairmanship next year. Speaking at the BRICS session on Environment, COP-30, and Global Health in Rio de Janeiro, PM Modi said India’s presidency will reflect the needs of the Global South.
He announced that under India’s chair, BRICS will stand for “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”
PM Modi emphasized India’s moral obligation toward climate justice, stressing that climate change for India is not just an energy issue but a balance between life and nature. He highlighted India’s leadership in green development, referencing initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, Mission LiFE, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
India’s health innovations were also showcased. Modi spoke about Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest public health scheme, and the digital health systems being used to reach remote areas. He reiterated India’s commitment to share these solutions with Global South countries.
Modi welcomed the BRICS Partnership for Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases and praised the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre as key steps in health cooperation.
The Prime Minister thanked President Lula da Silva and Brazil for hosting a successful summit and said India would carry forward the spirit of inclusivity seen during its G20 presidency.
India’s focus during its BRICS leadership, Modi added, will be on shared development, environmental sustainability, and healthcare equity with a strong humanitarian approach.
