India, Indonesia could emerge as brokers of new Middle Eastern balance: Italian expert

India and Indonesia, both non-aligned democracies with moral legitimacy in the Global South, have the potential to become unexpected brokers of a new Middle Eastern balance, safeguarding Israel’s security while recognising Palestinian aspirations, according to Italian geopolitical expert Sergio Restelli.

Writing in The Times of Israel, Restelli noted that the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has reshaped regional security dynamics. Against this backdrop, India and Indonesia have delivered pragmatic messages at the United Nations, offering an alternative to traditional power blocs.

“India continues to bridge East and West. New Delhi has stood firm against Islamist narratives, deepened security cooperation with Israel, and maintained credibility with Arab partners,” Restelli wrote. He contrasted India’s stability-focused approach with Pakistan, which he described as promoting jihadist networks.

Partnering with Indonesia, India could anchor a non-aligned peace pole prioritising stability over ideology. Both countries understand that any recognition of Palestine must be accompanied by hostage release, demilitarisation, and credible security guarantees for Israel. “Peace cannot be imposed from above but must be built on reciprocity, governance, and restraint,” Restelli added.

Highlighting Indonesia’s role, the expert noted President Prabowo Subianto’s UNGA speech, where he affirmed that Indonesia would recognise Israel only after Israel recognises Palestine, emphasizing mutual responsibility. Singapore’s foreign ministry similarly stressed that a Palestinian state must renounce terror and accept Israel’s right to exist.

Restelli argued that the combined leadership of New Delhi and Jakarta could revive the moral and pragmatic influence of the Non-Aligned Movement, offering a stabilising presence in Middle Eastern diplomacy and resisting manipulation by cynical actors.
