India flags UK as next hub for Khalistan activity after Canada crackdown

With Canada tightening its grip on Khalistani networks, Indian intelligence agencies have warned that Khalistan elements are now shifting operations to the United Kingdom, where they enjoy significant community support but less regulatory scrutiny.

Following Canada’s recognition of the Khalistan threat—including the designation of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity and financial action against extremist-linked charities—Indian officials believe the UK may emerge as the next operational base for these groups.

The UK, home to over 525,000 Sikhs, has a history of pro-Khalistan activism, from protests at the Indian High Commission to disruptions of cultural events and film screenings. Recent decisions, such as allowing a gurdwara to retain “Khalistan” plaques under free speech protections, have further raised India’s concerns.

Officials in New Delhi say that cooperation with Canada has strengthened after Prime Minister Mark Carney replaced Justin Trudeau, improving both security and economic relations. India now hopes for a similar partnership with the UK.

Ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to India on October 8–9, the issue of Khalistan extremism is expected to feature prominently in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside trade and economic matters.

Indian authorities remain confident that sustained diplomacy will encourage the UK to crack down on extremist financing and propaganda, ensuring that London does not become the new epicenter of Khalistani operations.
