India-US trade talks progressing, first tranche likely by November: Piyush Goyal
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that the first tranche of the India-US trade agreement is on track to be finalised by November 2025, adding that negotiations are progressing smoothly with “satisfaction on both sides.”
Speaking to reporters in poll-bound Bihar, Goyal recalled that in February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump had jointly directed ministers to conclude the first phase of the deal by November this year.
“In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump instructed us to work on a strong agreement by November. The first tranche of that agreement is expected to be finalised by November 2025. Since March, discussions have been taking place very seriously in a positive environment, and both sides are satisfied with the progress,” Goyal said.
The minister’s remarks come a day after Modi and Trump exchanged upbeat messages on social media, signaling renewed optimism after months of trade tensions.
On Truth Social, Trump said he was “pleased” with the resumption of negotiations and confident about resolving tariff disputes. He also referred to Modi as a “very good friend” and expressed eagerness to speak with him in the coming weeks.
Responding on X, Modi described the United States as a “close friend and natural partner,” adding that the talks would “pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential” of the India-US partnership. He assured that both negotiating teams were working to conclude discussions swiftly.
Trump later reshared Modi’s post, underscoring the positive momentum in bilateral trade ties as both nations push forward with negotiations.
