Trump: India ready to remove 100% tariffs on US goods

US President Donald Trump has claimed that India is prepared to remove 100 percent of tariffs on American goods, but said he is in no rush to finalize a trade agreement. Speaking to Fox News on Friday, Trump highlighted India as a top example of a country with high trade barriers that he aims to dismantle.

“They make it almost impossible to do business,” Trump said. “Do you know they’re willing to cut 100 percent of their tariffs for the United States?” However, he added, “That’ll come soon. I’m in no rush. Look, everybody wants to make a deal with us.”

Despite this apparent breakthrough, Trump also emphasized that he is not planning to strike trade deals with everyone. His comments suggest that the US may make unilateral decisions on import duty rates in the near future, particularly as a pause on higher tariffs expires in July.

In response, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar dismissed the idea of a finalized agreement, saying the negotiations are ongoing and complicated. “Nothing is decided till everything is. Any trade deal has to be mutually beneficial; it has to work for both countries,” Jaishankar told reporters.

Trump also hinted at reshaping broader trade dynamics, mentioning plans to announce new import duty rates for several trading partners within the next two to three weeks. He even suggested expanded trade ties with Pakistan, linking economic policy to peace efforts in the region.

The President framed trade as a tool for both resolving conflicts and reshaping global economic relationships. Referring to recent developments with China, Trump said he had reduced US tariffs from 145% to 30%, while China lowered its rates from 125% to 10% following talks.

“If I didn’t do that deal with China, I think China would have broken apart,” he claimed.
