Thankful for PM Modi backing Gaza peace plan: Israeli envoy Reuven Azar
Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the US-led peace plan aimed at ending the Gaza conflict. He also urged more nations to rally behind the initiative, calling it a “historic” opportunity for regional stability.
The statement came a day after US President Donald Trump unveiled a 20-point peace framework at the White House alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the proposal, describing it as a “viable pathway” to long-term peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis, as well as the broader West Asian region.
At a press conference in New Delhi, Azar emphasized the wide international backing for the plan. “It has the support of Arab and Muslim countries, and now the backing of Prime Minister Modi. We are very thankful for his support and hope more countries can join us,” he said.
Outlining preconditions for Palestinian self-rule, Azar highlighted governance, rule of law, and democratic principles. Key requirements include a constitution, free elections, protections for human rights, judicial independence, and transparent financial institutions that meet international standards. Anti-corruption measures, education reforms to remove incitement, and demilitarisation of territories were also stressed as essential steps.
Azar noted that Israel would begin withdrawals once hostages are released and a security perimeter is established. He acknowledged constructive roles by Egypt and Qatar and pointed to a broader Arab consensus on Hamas. “There is a chance Hamas can accept it now,” he added.
Calling for Gaza’s de-radicalisation, Azar said Israel hopes to share its economic success with Palestine. “We want to make sure de-radicalisation happens. If hostages are released within 72 hours, we can move forward,” he said.
