Jaishankar holds key bilateral talks at G7 meet, discusses West Asia tensions

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a series of high-level bilateral meetings with counterparts from Canada, South Korea, and Japan on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in France, focusing on strengthening partnerships and addressing pressing global challenges.

The meetings took place at the G7 ministerial gathering near Paris, which is being held against the backdrop of escalating conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, with global powers seeking coordinated responses to rising geopolitical instability.

During his interaction with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Jaishankar discussed advancing bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on the evolving situation in West Asia. The discussions come amid heightened tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, with global implications for energy security and regional stability.

Jaishankar also met South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, describing the interaction as “productive” and expressing confidence in further strengthening the partnership between the two countries. India and South Korea have been expanding cooperation in trade, technology, and strategic sectors, reflecting growing Indo-Pacific alignment.

In a separate meeting, Jaishankar held talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, highlighting the strong and enduring ties between the two nations. He described the meeting as a positive engagement with a long-standing partner.

Earlier, Jaishankar arrived in France to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at the invitation of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. The two-day meeting is expected to address a wide range of global issues, including the conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, maritime security, and economic stability.

According to French officials, discussions will focus on de-escalation efforts in the Middle East, including ensuring the reopening of critical trade routes and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programmes.

Jaishankar’s engagements underscore India’s active role in global diplomacy and its growing importance as a key partner in addressing complex international issues.
