Jaishankar strengthens India’s global partnerships at UNGA with key ministerial meetings
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar intensified India’s global outreach during the high-level session of the UN General Assembly 2025, holding a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings aimed at strengthening partnerships and advancing India’s voice on global issues.
Jaishankar met Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for what he described as a “useful discussion” on bilateral ties, the Ukraine conflict, and developments in the Middle East. With the United Arab Emirates’ Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, he exchanged views on bilateral cooperation ahead of the upcoming Joint Commission, underlining the deepening India–UAE strategic partnership.
Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger thanked Jaishankar for a “thoughtful discussion,” with both sides affirming the importance of closer India–Europe cooperation. The EAM also held talks with ministers from Antigua and Barbuda, Uruguay, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, and Romania, further broadening India’s diplomatic engagements.
In addition to bilateral meetings, Jaishankar participated in three significant group sessions: BRICS, IBSA (India-Brazil-South Africa), and a joint India–CELAC conclave. Co-chairing the CELAC meeting with Columbia’s Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, Jaishankar emphasized the “urgent need to reform multilateral institutions” to reflect the aspirations of the Global South.
The dialogue also identified key areas of collaboration including agriculture, trade, healthcare, digital transformation, disaster relief, and capacity building. Both sides agreed to explore emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, space, critical minerals, and renewable energy.
Through these engagements, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to shaping a more representative, resilient, and cooperative global order.
