Judge blocks Trump move on Harvard foreign students
A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from revoking Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students. U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs granted the restraining order after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) terminated Harvard’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.
The move would have prevented Harvard from admitting foreign students and forced current international students to transfer or lose their legal status. With the judge’s order, those students can remain enrolled for now. A hearing is scheduled for next week.
Harvard sued the federal government, arguing that the action violates its First Amendment rights and threatens nearly a quarter of its student body. The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts, names DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Attorney General Pam Bondi as defendants.
Harvard accused the administration of retaliating against the university for exercising control over its curriculum and academic ideology. DHS called the lawsuit an effort to “kneecap the President’s constitutionally vested powers” and defended the administration’s attempt to reform the student visa system.
