Modi congratulates Lawrence Wong on Singapore win
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended warm congratulations to Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong following the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) decisive victory in the general elections, securing its 14th consecutive mandate to govern.
In a message shared on X, PM Modi emphasized the strong and growing relationship between India and Singapore, stating:
“Heartiest congratulations, Lawrence Wong, on your resounding victory in the general elections. India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties. I look forward to continue working closely with you to further advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
The PAP significantly improved its electoral performance, winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats and boosting its vote share to 65.6 per cent from 61.2 per cent in 2020.
Lawrence Wong, who recently succeeded Lee Hsien Loong as Prime Minister, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming voter support.
“Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team,” he posted on X.
India and Singapore enjoy a deep-rooted Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, elevated during PM Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024. Their collaboration spans diverse sectors such as trade, defence, digital innovation, and education, founded on shared values and strong people-to-people connections.
Since 2014, PM Modi has visited Singapore five times for both bilateral and multilateral engagements. Notably, he was the first Indian Prime Minister to deliver the keynote at the Shangri-La Dialogue (2018) and the first head of government to address the Singapore FinTech Festival the same year.
