‘It’s a good sign’: Indian leaders welcome Modi–Trump review of India-US strategic partnership
Several Indian political leaders on Friday described the recent telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump as a positive and timely development for India–US relations, particularly amid ongoing trade frictions and evolving global challenges.
The leaders said the dialogue underscored the importance of sustained engagement between the world’s two largest democracies and reflected a shared commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Speaking to IANS, BJP MP Shashank Mani Tripathi said the conversation signaled a constructive approach to resolving misunderstandings related to tariffs and trade. “Both countries are friends. Certain misconceptions were created through tariff-related issues. If a good trade deal is reached, it will benefit both economies and help reduce inflation. It’s a good sign,” he said.
BJP MP Rajkumar Chahar emphasized that Prime Minister Modi’s diplomatic outreach is always guided by national interest. “Any decision taken by PM Modi — whether engaging with the US, Russia, or any other country — is focused on the welfare of India’s 140 crore citizens,” he said, expressing confidence in India’s foreign policy direction.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi welcomed the continued engagement between New Delhi and Washington but highlighted concerns over US tariffs. “It is encouraging to see two major democracies strengthening ties. However, the tariffs imposed by the US are worrying. I hope continued dialogue will result in an early resolution and lead to the finalization of a pending trade agreement,” she said.
TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu said the growing engagement reflects India’s rising economic strength. “India’s growth rate of over 8 per cent makes it a highly attractive market. At the same time, India’s service sector supports American industries. This cooperation must be mutually respectful and balanced, ensuring no one-sided advantage,” he said.
Following the call, Prime Minister Modi described the conversation as “warm and engaging,” noting that both leaders reviewed progress in bilateral relations and discussed regional and global developments. He said India and the US would continue working together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction over expanding cooperation across sectors, including critical technologies, energy, defence, and security. They also discussed advancing the India-US COMPACT initiative — Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce, and Technology for the 21st century.
Analysts say the exchange reflects renewed momentum in India-US ties at a time when global geopolitical alignments, trade negotiations, and strategic partnerships are increasingly interconnected.
