
India stands in solidarity with Philippines after deadly earthquake: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the devastating earthquake that struck the Philippines, killing at least 69 people and leaving dozens injured. He conveyed India’s solidarity with the people of the Philippines during this tragedy.
In a post on X, PM Modi said: “Deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives and widespread damage caused by the earthquake in the Philippines. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the Philippines at this difficult time.”
According to the Philippines’ Office of Civil Defence (OCD), the 6.9-magnitude quake struck Cebu province late Tuesday night. The epicenter was reported in Bogo City, where 30 deaths occurred. Other fatalities were confirmed in Medellin (10), San Remigio (22), Tabogon (5), and one each in Sogod and Tabuelan.
Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro of the OCD said that most victims were crushed under collapsed houses and buildings. Initial reports listed at least 147 injured, while search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate survivors trapped in debris. Officials warned that the death toll could rise further.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology first measured the quake at 6.7 but later upgraded it to 6.9, occurring at a shallow depth of 5 km. The tremors were strongly felt across central provinces and parts of southern Philippines. Authorities also reported over 600 aftershocks since Tuesday night, adding to fears of further damage.
