PM Modi chairs crucial CCS meeting after Pahalgam terror attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to chair two high-level cabinet meetings on Wednesday in the wake of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 civilians dead, including tourists and a Nepali national.

The key meetings include the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), sources confirmed. A session of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is also expected to follow.

This will be the first full Union Cabinet meeting since the April 22 attack, which targeted Hindu tourists in Baisaran valley. The government has already taken strong measures in response, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, shutting the Attari border, cancelling visas for Pakistani nationals, blocking Pakistani digital media accounts, and further downsizing diplomatic missions.

The upcoming CCS meeting, chaired by PM Modi, will be the second such session since the attack and is expected to solidify India’s next course of action. Military options to retaliate against Pakistan-backed terror groups may be on the table.

The CCS had already convened on April 23 to review the security situation and ordered all forces to maintain maximum vigilance. India has vowed justice for the victims and accountability for the sponsors of the attack.

The CCPA meeting is also of strategic importance. Historically, it was last called after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, which led to the withdrawal of Pakistan’s Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status and was followed by the Balakot airstrikes.

Meanwhile, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a separate high-level meeting on Tuesday to assess the internal security landscape. The focus was on tightening border security, boosting counter-terror operations, and enhancing intelligence coordination.

The brutal Pahalgam attack has prompted a wave of urgent policy deliberations at the highest level. Of the 26 people killed, most were Hindu tourists, and at least one local and a Nepali national were among the victims. The terrorists reportedly targeted Hindu men selectively in the assault.
